Junior Ranger Camp en Espanol

On Wednesday and Thursday (August 13th and 14th) along with the other volunteer, Julie, I helped my boss, Deanna, run the first Junior Ranger Camp in Spanish at Rock Creek Park! We took them on two hikes, did a scavenger hunt, taught them about the importance of recycling and caring for nature, took them to do an investigation of a nearby creek, allowed them to share with us all that they love about Rock Creek Park and they were able to learn how the Native Americans cut leather and made tools and used arrows! It was really fun and the kids were amazing. They were so interested in nature and animals and learning. We were on our hike on Thursday and we passed by some parks workers cutting the tops of some trees and the kids, all in unison, started chanting "don't kill live trees! don't kill live trees!" They are 10. Another moment that I loved was walking through the forest and asking them for 10 minutes of total silence as we walked. The silence was great and allowed all of us to listen to the birds and the rustling of the leaves. After the 10 minutes were up we asked one of the kids, Andrey, what he thought of the silent walk and he said he loved it because he could hear so many things - that it was like music. Deanna asked him what kind of music and he said, "Beethoven."
